Hello Sculptors-- Here's someone you should know about-- Simon Rodia. He was an Italian immigrant brick-layer by day, artist by night. His "Watts Towers" are located in Los Angeles, California. Click Here.
I was really shocked when I first saw those towers. They are beautiful and intricate with each design. I was the most shocked by how many tiny pieces there were that made up these towers. All the pieces that made up these towers ranged from beads to broken glass bottles. It is amazing how much time, effort and patience the artists who made these tower took. I really enjoyed seeing these towers and I am still in awe of how beautiful and detailed they are.
The thing that I still can't get over, is that the whole structure, with all it's towers and details was made by only one man. It's just unbelievable!
I also thought that his perseverance: working for 33 years on it, every night, was also really amazing. I loved the colorful mosaics imbedded throughout the pieces, and also the archways over the "entrances" of the sculpture.
WOW. I'm at loss for words. I can't believe he sculpted those towers without any formal training, but then again, I agree with the speaker when he said, formal training would have ruined him. He had a genius no one could teach him how to use. I also can't believe he fell at his old age and only broke his hip! He must be very lucky. I hope to go to California one day to take a look at these two towers.
The only remarkable part of of this whole deal seems to be that some Italian guy was able to climb 99 feet into the air while drunk on wine, and he only fell once! It seemed that the only bit of talent needed to accomplish this sculpture in 33 years would be climbing-related.
I was surprised that he stopped after only falling and breaking his hip. The Watts Towers must have been his goal in life. Its hard to believe he built that all by himself. Pretty remarkable.
I find it incredibly interesting that Rodia created his towers without planning anything out! Even in our class, as amateur sculptors, we plan out a design of what we want to include in our pieces (such as what we did for the reliefs). However, this man simply did it day by day.. talk about living in the moment! It is so inspiring to see a man with so much determination so focused on working on something that he was truly passionate about and that really made him genuinely happy.
I think we all know how long it takes to make something that actually seems so small. Seeing these absolutely huge towers so intricately encrusted with glass and tiles was incredible. Trying to fathom how long it must've taken him to build that is almost impossible. I cannot imagine how many times I would have felt discouraged and frustrated and wanted to give up on such a task. I did notice right away that it looks like the towers in Barcelona designed by Gaudi. The architecture of those towers are beaitiful, they soar and climb so incredibly high into the sky and I think that he really captured that same effect in his sculpture.
The Watts Towers and the way in which they were constructed remind me of te pyramids in Egypt. They are so massive and so intricate that many people find it hard to believe that they were built by human hands. After seeing the work of Simon Rodia, I, as well as many people, find it difficult to believe that he himself built. ALone at that! Not only are all aspects of the towers beautiful and well-crafted, but they are huge! For him to be the age he was, working alone, in the middle of the night, the work he produced is remarkable.
I think what would bother me about the towers is the mosaics all over it. i find it amazing that he never got tired of working on it because for me working on the same project over and over again i would think am i done yet so i can start something new.
The towers are so pretty. From what I could see in the video, it seems like a little village. It’s so great that he actually has the time to encrust the whole thing by himself.
Rodia's work is so unique and i cannot find anything comparable to it in the middle of a town or city in the United States. I find it intriguing that he did this all by himself, day by day, until he felt that it was finished. Out of all the videos we have seen, i thought that this piece of artwork was the most appealing. The mosaic craftmanship gives the towers a sort of dreamy castle glow...in the middle of Los Angeles, which makes the towers even more unique. His dedication to this project (breaking his hip and climbing to the tops of the towers) is remarkable.
When I first saw the towers, I thought I was looking at some amusement park scenery. I really love how he just made these with "no plans", he just built and worked with what he had, and yet these structures are standing strong enough to be in an open space available for the public to roam as if it were a park, even knowing that it had to be repaired several times. And I love that thought of how these towers only exist because "it escapes all normal construction rationale", because although I highly doubt that many people would go to this extent, taking a risk for things that you think would be impossible can be worth it, not only in art.
It is a wonder as to how such comlexly molded towers and sculptures were so simply put together. Especially considering the fact that the man who created this masterpiece had no formal education in architecture. The beauty of this lies in the simplicity of the idea that forms the basis of the structures as a whole, the amount of time and effort it took to afford such and immense production, and the complexity of the sculptures of almost randomly placed materials. Such feats display the power and the application of the human imagination regardless of technical knowledge.

I wasn't expecting the Watts Towers to be so big and impressive. Having been in the mosaics seminar, I can't even imagine how much patience and motivation Simon Rodia must have had for him to finish his towers. Really, these towers are a great example of the result of people who have unwavering drive and passion for what they love. Amazing!
Also, it definitely must be hard for the LA city council to decide whether or not to privatize these towers. The city does not have enough money to clean and maintain these sculptures....but if the towers are privatized, then they would not be a public facility anymore. This seems like a lose-lose situation for me, but I suppose I support the privatization of these sculptures. I think their maintenance very important.
It's very ironic that these beautiful and intricate sculptures have confirmed him as one of the sculptors of the 20th century due to lack of practice and experience. But the fact that he no previous experience what so ever and was able to create these sculptures amazes me, but explains why these sculptures seem so free, with no regard for following rules.
wow!! thats impressive.. it was also really unexpected, like i never really though of mosaic in that way, but it was really amazing. it reminded me of a mosaic exhibit i saw at the Garfield Park Conservatory, with similar color and the mosaic style, but all of the sculptures were on a smaller scale and you could like climb on them and interact. still mosaic is a really cool style, and these towers were crazy cool
The thing that I find most amazing about this piece is the sheer size of it and the commitment he has to it.I could never imagine spending over half of my life on one piece. I also think the way he thought about mosaics was interesting because I have never seen them used like that.
I'm really suprised that he could create all this. But i must ask, did these creations come from his brilliant mind or the fact that he was drunk when he worked on these towers?
Wow! just thinking about the time and dedication he put into creating the piece is in itself amazing. I feel like the fact that he took so much time out of hiss life to create such intricate building like sculptures truly shows his dedication to his art. I was expecting just extremely large wire sculptures, but the mosaic-like detail on the sides of some of the sculptures was so amazing, it was a nice small touch to extremely large sculptures.
Wow!! I am very impressed! I loved the wall-like object that was at :08. The whole place looks like a lost colony, lived in and controlled by little children. Haha, there's a lot of colors. I bet it would look really cool to have that design in our bathrooms, haha. The light shining on the glass pieces would probably look really cool. I also like the 7up bottle randomly spotted on one of the structures. This guy surely has a lot of passion for his work. I love it!

At first the sculpture looked more like ruins to me, they seem like something you'd take a tour on in rome or greece, and they feel like they're from a distant past. I really can't believe that one guy made these huge structures all by himself! I wish I could go see them in person. I skimmed the article that was with the video and the problem about who is going to own the towers and if they might be destroyed reminded me of a book I read when I was little about a girl who's uncle or relative built a tower like this and there was a fight about it getting torn down. I can't remember the name of the book but it was really good!
i really like the time and work that was put in these towers...it almost reminds u of your childhood due to the extravagant colors...since we have been learn bout alice for the past week this art does give u a since of fantasy..it is wonderful...i just love the effort that was put into the towers
first hearing about it, there's an obvious limit to how large you'd expect the towers to be, but just looking at the picture is remarkable. i never would have imagined. it looks like an amusement park. i wouldn't be able to even guess the process he went through to make it. and it's not even melded, and it wasn't planned.. for some things this could take away the artist element of it, but i think that made the watts towers that much more interesting.
I cannot believe that these towers by Rodia are not more famous! I wish that I had known about them and seen them when I visited LA. This work of art reminded me of a jungle gym and amusement park combined, except that it is much more beautiful. I'm so glad that the video showed close-ups because you are able to see many different materials that Rodia used. There seemed to rocks, tiles (of course), and even shells!

I wish I could've seen them in person when I was in California but I'll just have to remember to make a visit the next time I go out there
Those towers are amazing! It's so true when the article said that they are "under-acknowledged", because I have never seen/heard of the towers before. I'm also surprised how much effort and time Rodia put into this. It's hard for me just to make a clay pot in class. He definitely deserves more attention for his artwork, because there are very few sculptors that can accomplish what Rodia did.
Its so interesting how Simon Rodia had no "formal training" as he says. It would usually strike me as something that wouldnt matter, since art is not a technical thing. But for Rodia to build such huge towers out of glass and tiles, and them not collapse must have been such an achievement.
The sculpture is amazing! It's amazing to think that a person could create something so big. It's even more interesting to know that the artist never intended for this to be a work of art. It definitely took a lot of patience and hard work to make this sculpture a masterpiece. I admire the artist for his dedication.
Wow, this sculpture is truly amazing. These are so many incredible aspects to these towers. For one, they are beautifully built and the materials actually reminded me of a sculpture we saw at the Museum of Contemporary Art by Calder. The materials are just random objects but put together all these different colors and materials make a beautiful masterpiece. Secondly, it is unbelievable that Rodia created this without any planning whatsoever. It is mind-blowing to think that he created this without any idea of where he was going to end up. This truly shows the power of imagination. Rodia really was a genius.
I've heard about these! they were even featured in one of the newest simpsons episodes... ther're better than i heard. and this is just more proof that you dont need formal training in art or even technology to understand it or be good at it. the towers are just so free.. and big.. amazing that one man could make them.

The towers a little wacko and they remind me of a Dr. Seuss book, as if someone made it into real life in mosaic form. They are kind of cheesy and exaggerated but at the same time they are inspiring and just plain awesome (the size mostly). I thought it was funny how Buckminster Fuller said that with his classical training, he could never have made such a design as the Watts Towers - they defy way too many rules of conventional design and architecture. So in a way that makes me not want to be "classically trained" in any art form... If I don't know the rules in the first place, it'll be a lot easier to not follow them.
When i saw the video i was really surprised. In the article it said that some were up to 99 feet tall, but i didnt think they would be that thick and intricate. I spent most of the time while watching the video trying to comprehend the motivation he must have had to complete the towers
Rodia's towers are as amazing as he is. He built the towers in the moment with no training and that takes an ability to see something new where there is nothing or to take something old and transform it. I think he represents that in the fact that he used a mosaic to cover the towers. Mosaics are made up of old small tiles or glass to make something new and exciting, which is what the towers were. I like these and think it was incredible that he only fell once, damaging his hip!
These towers are pretty awesome. It's really impressive that he made them all by himself. They look pretty intricate and would not really be too easy to make, especially because of the size. It doesn't surprise me that it took him so long to finish because of how big and detailed it is. Also the fact that he had no plan for it shows his improvisational skills. It's pretty impressive.
Wow. These towers are simply amazing. To be able to come up with such ideas and then to carry out these ideas without 'constructually" building them but MOLDING them is just mind-boggling. The fact that there is nothing but cement, clay, broken glass, and other things of the sort is so cool to see these towers get built that tall with. Mr. Simon was clearly a very dedicated and motivated sculptor to have the time and patience it took to build such extravagant towers as these. I am amazed at the concept of literally building, molding, and shaping these. I would love to visit and see them for myself. Simply incredible.

When i saw the video i was really surprised. In the article it said that some were up to 99 feet tall, but i didnt think they would be that thick and intricate. I spent most of the time while watching the video trying to comprehend the motivation he must have had to complete the towers
Rodia's towers are as amazing as he is. He built the towers in the moment with no training and that takes an ability to see something new where there is nothing or to take something old and transform it. I think he represents that in the fact that he used a mosaic to cover the towers. Mosaics are made up of old small tiles or glass to make something new and exciting, which is what the towers were. I like these and think it was incredible that he only fell once, damaging his hip!
These towers are pretty awesome. It's really impressive that he made them all by himself. They look pretty intricate and would not really be too easy to make, especially because of the size. It doesn't surprise me that it took him so long to finish because of how big and detailed it is. Also the fact that he had no plan for it shows his improvisational skills. It's pretty impressive.
Wow. These towers are simply amazing. To be able to come up with such ideas and then to carry out these ideas without 'constructually" building them but MOLDING them is just mind-boggling. The fact that there is nothing but cement, clay, broken glass, and other things of the sort is so cool to see these towers get built that tall with. Mr. Simon was clearly a very dedicated and motivated sculptor to have the time and patience it took to build such extravagant towers as these. I am amazed at the concept of literally building, molding, and shaping these. I would love to visit and see them for myself. Simply incredible.
