Who needs Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?

THis polar bear was the inflatable art that launched Joshua Allen Harris into the limelight. His pieces are delightful, and really make me think about the deeper implications of this work. check out this video: street art:Joshua Allen Harris' Inflatable Bag Monsters.

Then click to take a look at another incredible kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen featured in this BMW commercial. His work is amazing. Graceful, funny, other-worldly. Tell me what you think....

These mobile structures are really interesting. I especially like the wooden ones that walk. Those sculptures are very intricate and would take a lot of work to make. The artist would have to be very detail oriented, careful, and talented to make one of these sculptures.

the moving "animal" sculpturs are insaine how big they are. who has that kind of pashence

All of the sculptures were absolutely phenomenal. I personally liked the inflatable bag sculptures the most because they are pieces that are constantly being recreated, in a sense. I also liked these the most because they demonstrate that impressive art can be made from the most inexpensive materials.

The large, "animal pieces are really astonishing, considering the multiple components that they consist of. Thinking about the process to make them gives me a headache. Also, I enjoy the bag sculptures and respect the forms due to the results of my own bag sculpture, working with bags and tape to create a 3-D figure is kind of more difficult than I thought.

I looked up some videos of his other creatures and I what can I say, other than they are amazing! I am thoroughly impressed with his creations. I wonder what inspires him. . .

i have herd of these before i saw them on here the giant moving wind creatures. they are really cool and built by this really old guy and when they are done they move all by themselves using wind power. they walk around the coastline where he lets them go. it is so cool that science and art meet at last

I love the inflatable sculptures. Maybe one day I'll make something to tape onto the subway vents...
In regards to the moving sculptures, those things are insane! He must have a lot of time, patience, and a really long ladder to complete those. However, I think it's pretty creepy how they move on their own..

Amelia Kassa said...

The moving sculptures are almost scary. It's astonishing to think that things can move in such an intricate way just by wind power. They remind me of giant caterpillars.

i wish my plastic bag sculpture could look that authentic

With the mobile structures that he's created, ranging from medium-sized to gargantuan, do you think that after a while he'll just let them continue to roam until they collapse, assuming that they're made from biodegradable material?

The pieces these two artists have created are incredible in their own means. They both use the environment to help power movement. To me though, the beach walkers are the coolest sculptures I have ever seen. The way he combines science and art so easily is inspiring. I'm in awe.

The moving sculptures are really cool. I wonder I they would be able to carry someone?

the inflatable bag sculptures were pretty cool but the walkers are insane. to make something that big and have every piece of wood dependant on the other one, wow.

these sculptures are very interesting. i like the polar bear bag the most because its so simple yet intricate. it makes me wonder how long it took to create all of these, and think of the person who had the time and patience to put into it.

I really liked the blow up sculptures because it shows how many details the artist was able to incorporate in them making them seem a bit more realistic. I think the wooden 'animals' that the other man made are really intricate and detailed and it makes me wonder how much time he spent on building each of them because he had that whole 'discard' type of garden thing.

Mitch Fogelson said...

I think that those movable animals are cool and the guy is smart and could be doing something more important with his intellegence than making something that doesnt really do anything, and the bags were supper cool!

I love the polar bear! It is the cutest thing. And the animals on the beach have a different quality to them that I would never expect to see on the beach. Also they have characteristics that give them personalities.

After trying and somewhat failing at creating a paper bag structure that resembles an animal, I have a deeper appreciation for these type of art. I believe it takes a lot of vision and science to be able to build the polar bear and makes sure it inflates properly. I was very impressed by the polar bears!

Nora Rombalski said...

I think both kinds of sculptures are amazing. But i personally liked the inflatable bags better because they look so realistic. The mobile sculptures are also very impressive because they are so big and look so complex and intricate.

The moving sculptures have so much detail and it has a certain life-like appearance that adds to its brilliance.

I love the moving animal structures. They are so unique. Like I feel like the fact that they move by themselves is just utterly amazing in itself like they are legit just "walking" on their own as seen in the video. I really like those sculptures the most. The bag animal sculptures are also really nice I just think I have developed and bias towards them due to the in class project that we had to do. It's not that I didn't have fun, it was just challenging to get it to work and thus I've created this bias against those who make them well :-)

I really enjoy how these sculptures are more available during day to day life and not just stuck in a room somewhere. I also wonder how Joshua Allen Harris specifically made the paper bag sculptures without the wood becasue his was able to puff up but mine wasn't able to.

Eddie Bresnahan said...

It seems very interesting and very complex too make. There seems to be a lot of time put into these structures.

I think all the sculptures are great. The wooden ones are very intricate and look so complex. Personally, I really like the inflatable sculptures. The polar bear looks so cute.

I liked all of the sculptures, but I enjoyed the ones that walked with the wind the most because they look really intricate. The plastic bag ones are cool too, but I don't trust people enough to leave them unattended and out in the open.

I noticed that a lot of sources state that Jansen's sculptures replicates artificial intelligence. I don't know whether they were his own words or not, but I was a bit bothered by that, I suppose because it just seems pretentious that this supposed "artificial intelligence" doesn't even embody itself in something like a data chip. I understand how there isn't a barrier between art and engineering, but the terms just bother me -- I think if I saw more sculptures like this that assume artificial intelligence without a computer chip, then I'd gradually accept it, which I would like to do.

All of these sculpture are very interesting and unique. I especially like the moving, mobile sculptures because of how intricate they look. They seem like they really could be strange animals walking on the beach, as they can move on just wind power. It must have been very frustrating to perfect them.

I think the kenetic sculpture is very creative and imaginative. I think it is really cool how the pieces look like they are actually coming to life. The artist not only had artistic capability to complete such a task, but also a physics mind as well to make the object move by wind energy. I also like the size of the sculptues because they look more life size and like real animals of some sort. I appreciate his artwork.

Derek Yee said...

The most interesting part of these sculptures is that they are not things that just sit on a table and look cool, but that they can actually move on their own too. It's pretty amazing how an inanimate object could look so lifelike

I really love theo jansen's work, especially how they can move on their own using wind power. Jansen might seem crazy but he's a genius.

Itzel Centeno said...

The mobile structures are really cool! It's amazing how the artist made such intricate sculptures and made them mobile at the same time. It seems like a lot of work went into each piece. They look so amazing and detailed, but it seems so hard to make.
The inflatable polar bear is so cute and simple. It's amazing how something so ordinary like garbage bags can make such realistic animals.

Nora Molasky said...

I like how both the polar bear sculpture and the kinetic wooden ones are able to move without constant human intervention. This independent movement gives the viewer of the sculptures the opportunity to imagine that the sculptures are "alive".

I really like the kinetic sculptures. They extremely unique. I think they are kind of like us. We are made of simple elements like oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, yet we are so complex. These sculptures are made with simple materials, but they are difficult to recreate. Plus they require air or wind to move like us!

The bag art is cool, too.

I think the moving sculptures on the beach are beautiful! I love how gracefully they move. I enjoyed seeing his passion for his work and how these pieces have actually become a part of him.

Breanne Durovic said...

I like the polar bear! It looks so good when he did it (not that ours didn't look great)! But the mobile structures are really cool too, the wooden ones that is. When they walk, they remind me of Beauty's dad's gizmo that he made in Beauty and the Beast. I think it's cool that they move just by the wind, not even a push (well, a little push maybe).

TeArie Williams said...

Looking at the mobile structures i was at first fascinated by how they were powered by the wind and moved so gracefully. In comparison to the garbage/plastic bag blow up sculptures i loved how when inflated they were given so much life and were easily recognizable

Naomi Frankel said...

I find the moving sculptures truly remarkable. They may not be the prettiest thing to look at, however i can't even imagine all the exact calculations that had to go into their formation. In addition, they look fun and challenging to make.

Chinue Wilford said...

These specific art pieces are very creative and I can tell from the detail and size it took lots of work. If only i had the patience to do such a thing...

m_montgom3ry said...

I think the wooden animals are creepy to say the least, however, I give the artist credit for the amount of time and patience it took for him to create something like that. They look very detailed and tedious. You have to be a true, dedicated artist to build something of that magnitude. It is a very unique type of art. The plastic bags on the other hand are very cost effective, which shows that you can make art out of almost anything. If you are really a true artist, you can build a lot from limited resources. I like the fact that the plastic bags could have been/can be recycled.

Olivia Jones said...

I would really like to attempt and make a mobile structure just not that big. A mini mobile structure! The Artist has have so much patience in order to successfully create pieces like that. I thought that it was very cool the way he just lets them free when he feels that he is finished with them.

Pierce Randle said...

Despite the insufficiency of my own piece, I still love the idea of a "living" piece of art, and I enjoyed both works in this post very thoroughly. I have a bias for the wooden pieces, however, because they are so meticulously made requiring both patience and knowledge, which are noble traits.

Nadia Ayala said...

it cool that the air helps them become alive

Maurice Goodman said...

The fact that those figures are driven by wind and despite their huge size appear to have a very delicate, transparent, unimposing presence which appears almost natural. The fact that their built out of thin sticks yet can brave the elements, in a way, contradicts the popular depiction of nature as harsh and unforgiving, because such a delicate form can coexist with it's surrounding environment without sustaining damage.

Daniela H. said...

The movable sculptures were fascinating. Before this project, I had never given the idea of a movable sculpture thought. These are very unique ways of approaching an age old art form, and I can appreciate art that is not restricted by one definition.

Tricia Andrade said...

I really like how both artists make their sculptures come to life. Theo Jansen's sculptures seemed the most realistic because they were capable of walking. Watching them stroll down the beach was scary because you normally only think of humans or animals being able to walk. In this case, the artist gave a lifeless object the ability to walk which is highly impressive.

Eddie Bresnahan said...

I like the inflatable polar bear a lot.
