Niki DeSaintPhalle was an incredible artist, full of whimsy and play. Like our class, her work frequently used the human form as subject. No doubt about it - creativity continued to flow through her.
I tried selecting one website for you to visit, but there are A LOT. Instead, I am asking that you search two things--Her series of "Nanas"- large, full figured women, and "Hon"- a gigantic ,   walk-in, club house style Nana.
Please post your responses here.
Enjoy.

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the Frey pieces. They are very abstract and large. However I liked the playful colors, and the vases seemed to hold her style of painting better.

The Nana pieces by Niki de Saint Phalle didn't really attract my attention. While the colors were very vibrant, I didn't like the extremely exaggerated features of the characters.

Viola Frey's work was very interesting. Perhaps my favorite part of her work was the colors that she used in her sculptures. The juxtaposition of the bright colors and the simple form of the bodies was very unique and seemed to work well. I also loved her vases. They were huge! I was amazed to see that they were life size. Like the human figurines, on her vases she used beautiful bold colors. It's always a happy encounter when an artist is not a afraid to play with color and different combinations of patterns and textures and colors. All-in-all, her work is "neat."

The pieces by Niki are very colorful and beautiful. However, they made me feel almost uncomfortable. The Hon ones were walking inbetween the legs of a woman. This seems very suggestive, but regardless interesting. Her pieces set a tone of joy and cheerfullness.

I don't think I have ever seen artwork quite like hers. Not only do the vibrant colors catch my attention but the figure and portrayal of the women is fascinating and at the same time disturbing. Although I do think her sculptures are magnificent, the way the women are heavy and in exotic poses is a little weird. I would want to know what inspired her to first off capture the image of what most people wouldn't consider a beautiful figure.

I liked the Frey pieces because they're real people and actions, but unreal colors. This contrast brings a great affect to the pieces, giving them more emotion.

the pieces by Niki were really interesting. I really like her use of bright colors and different shapes. Her pieces are really out there and they make the surroundings magical.

i reallyy liked these peiceses. they seemed very wimsicle. this was probably because of the bright colors and bold figures. i liked that niki used bold characters instead of the normal slender model. i also like the characters of her hon collection. The other artist collections were similar with their tall figures and i liked the position of their models (standing tall or laying down).

Nikki's work reminds me somewhat of Frey's in that they both use somewhat free-formed structures and mix that with extravagant, bold colors.
Nikki has a nice sense of whimsy and curves which parallels to a wonderful shape. I personally like her placement of lines of color on a white backgrounded shape. The additional shapes that she uses, like the heart, makes for an interesting piece of artwork as well. I like Nikki de Saint Phalle's work better than Viola Freys mostly because it is more abstract and I can see some true imagination in her work. She brings art that I wouldn't necessarily think about otherwise.

I really like this artist's vision. It is a very abstract and colorful take on the female body. It is as though Niki is trying to emphasize the features that are unique to the female body.
I agree with Kim though about the Hon. I understand how that could make one feel uncomfortable because it seems as though it is suggesting something. Nonetheless the pieces were interesting and the captured my attention.

i like the bright colors and warmt one of the peices. they are happy and a celebration of women. but it isnt exactly something i would want in my living room

I really liked these pieces. The color choices were so bright and you could feel a vibe of excitement and happiness coming off of them. I liked how pretty much nothing she did was symmetrical or repeated. Normally the human eye seems to be attracted to things of proportion, like the Golden rectangle, but she had tons of different sized body parts and there were all different types of patterns and designs in one work alone. It was fun I guess you could say.

I really felt intrigued and excited when i saw Hon the enormous peice by Niki de Saint Phalle. I am a big fan of the vibrant colors it makes the sculpture have all around happy feel to it. I thought the entrance to the sculpture was a bit odd but it just added to the excitment.

The pieces were very interesting. I liked how they looked very realistic. But what really stood out was the colors she used, they caught my attention with all the different shades.

It seems unusual that she is able to get the sculptures to stay intact while being so huge. Both their enormous size and color choices caught my attention. It appears that Viola Frey has a nice sense of shape and form despite the largness of the sculptures.

i really like the nanas. the expressions they incite are very powerful and you can clearly tell Niki had a clear message in mind when she made them. The fact that they are huge and very in your face adds to her message. The color is a nice choic4e though had she left them a single color i think they would have worked equally well. very eye cathing and nice compositions.

The hon (she) is awesome. i feel like it is more significant to see in person(as with all sculptures really) bu ti get the message. when i saw it, the first ting that came to mind were images of all the important women in my life, mother sister, camila everyone.

I find the sculptures freaky. But in a cool way.

I liked Nikki de Saint Phalle's The Moon in her tarot sculptures. The colors look less cluttered than the other pieces. I also like the dragon, but that's just because I like the shinyness of the green.

I also liked Edweard Muybridge's running broad jump (and not just because it has a guy in a speedo). It's just interesting to see different frames of motion lined up together. It's also makes for really neat reference pictures.

Man do these women have a lot of time on their hands, if i havent known better i would have to say that they are living large. The Viola Frey's work is very creative and consisted many colors. Especially in her vases, they show a big contrast of bright colors and pertains to some sort of weird puzzle.

But Niki de Saint Phalle and her "nanas" just make me laugh when i look at them. It gives me a sort of happiness and silliness because of how disconfigured the body parts of these huge woman are and the nana house looks awesome. Don't want to wonder to far though if ya know what i mean ;) eh eh eh?

Viola Frey's works are very unique. I like how they all seem to be made of 8 pieces that are put together which is an interesting way of sculpting them. One of them looks like me which is kinda creepy.

I like how playfull and large they are. The colors and actions together make it fell happy and vibrant. I think it would be realy fun to build something that large, especialy something that you can climb in.

The nanas are totally and completely radical, I think, especially coming from a French artist. If I were to have seen them without knowing anything about the artist, I would have assumed that they came from an African artist. It's interesting, though, how it's easy to assume that the artist is a woman. If the nanas were more sensual or barbie-shaped and less playful, I might have assumed that the artist were a man (I suppose presuming that all men are heterosexual and that all heterosexual men are completely infatuated with sex and barbie-doll bod's). But the bright colors and grandiose woman-forms suggest a sort of uninterest in sex completely, and I think that's why these sculptures are so different; often sculptures of woman forms are completely sexualized, yet these are made with an intention very far from sex, I think. I like them.

i really liked her work. it's silly and colorfull. i thought it was kinda psychadelic. my favorite piece of heers is guardian lion. it's a big lion. it's shape is warped and softened. i've sat on top of the lion, and it was very fun. it was sunny an the lion was warm. it felt cozy and cool.

I thought the Niki DeSaintPhalle and Edweard Muybridge's pieces were very interesting. Niki DeSaintPhalle's artwork was very colorful and abstract. I liked the bright colors because they caught my eye, but I didn't especially like the exaggerated female features. I wonder why she chose to exaggerate them? I liked Edweard Muybridge's motion pictures. I think it's very cool to capture simple actions to multiple freeze frames. You're able to see every detail associated with the motion.

I really liked the bright colors Niki used is her mosaics. The nans were interesting. Even more interesting was the hon. I'm not really sure how I feel about it. The thing that really caught my eyes were the colors, they were awesome.

Like many others I found Niki's use of bright colors in the "nanas" and her other pieces attractive. It grabbed my attention and kept me interested in the piece. There was also often a wide variety of textures, adding to the overall uniqueness. I liked the bold figures she used and the abstract feel of her artwork.

I found the Nana pices by Niki were weird because of of how she had an abstract look of the human body but the bright vibrant colors that she used has drawn me into her art.

I really liked Edward muybridge pic's because when i first saw it it was so different from when i normally saw.

Frey's exaggerated, large, and colorful sculptures are what mesmorize the people that look at them. she makes her work stand out and be noticed

JA said...

the work's not exactly subtle, is it? i'll agree with everyone who has said the figures are very exaggerated-- tho never, do i think, does that exaggeration distort them. it enhances them, elevates them to a celebratory, if not playful, platform.

celebration probably is the best way to describe what i feel from the pieces. her sexuality is never subdued, her political/social statements are bold, confident, and clear. the vibrancy enlivens her sculptures and informs their spirit.

Niki DeSaintPhalle's series of "Nanas" is really interesting. It shows women's movement with monstrous pieces. they are all serenely happy with brightly pained, which is my favourite part. Viola Frey's pieces are quite interesting too. However, it isnt quite bright as Niki's pieces. However, the simple form and color Frey used on the sculpture is unique.

The Niki de Saint Phalle pieces are really amazing. A lot of them look really random, but I'm sure that that was accomplished with careful planning. It's not really my kind of art, but I still thought it was interesting. I liked how she made the Nanas look human, but then colored them so many different colors.

I enjoyed Niki's nana sculptures. The vibrancy and the exaggeration were refreshing; they carry a somewhat whimsical tone. I saw the nana's as nurturing figures and didn't find them offensive or disturbing.

Unknown said...

Nikki's Nanas are attention grabbing due to their scale and vibrancy. Her inspiration behind this large series makes the Nanas even more interesting. Her Hon project seems to challenge people's comfort with the female body. The colors and shapes she employs make the artwork incredibly original.

On first glance, I liked the pieces because of the colors, which were very vibrant and exaggerated. But when we looked at other Frey pieces in class, I didnt like the "non-whimsical pieces" that were actually dressed with shoes. I think the exaggerated shapes of the Nanas are better suited with the exaggerated color schemes.

li really enjoyed these pieces. They were different but in a good way to mean. I can not say I am really sure about the message she is trying to send about women. The message could be negative or positive. I like her uniqueness and orginality. I think building A town or city or maybe even the payton city would be fun and interesting...

Her sculptures are great, colorful, bright, and creative. The Tarot Garden makes me think of a cartoon circus because her sculptures are not so much about the details but about the movement and color. But then again alot of her work is mosaics which is alot of detail that takes time. I like her art work, maybe not to be in my house to look at everyday but I appreciate it.

The Frey pieces were filled with brightly colorful contrasting paints and for some reason i liked this style because of this.

Whenever i see Nana pieces by Niki they just bring a smile to my face and make me laugh. I love how big and disproportional the body parts maybe but it contains a quite playful and soft heart. The Nana house was just amazing and i would say you shouldn't wonder around too much, you might get lost ;)
